Little Mole’s Christmas Gift (Book Review & Giveaway)

by Vanessa Myers

Would you like a new Christmas book for kids to add to your collection? Little Mole is back! And this time it’s Christmas!

If you are familiar with children’s author, Glenys Nellist, then you have probably heard of Little Mole. In her first book (Little Mole Finds Hope), she introduces us to this cute, adorable creature who learns from his mother that hope is found even in the darkest times. It was a beautiful story for all children!

In Glenys’ 2nd book, Little Mole’s Christmas Gift, children learn another impotant lesson from Little Mole…the message of kindness. The story begins with Little Mole finding the perfect Christmas gift for his mother. He ventures out on a snowy day to get the mushroom he found for his mother. On his way back, he comes across three animals who are in need. One needs food, one needs a pillow to rest, and the other needs an umbrella to protect him from the storm. Oh how I love Little Mole’s heart!! He gives some of the mushroom for food, some to use as a pillow to rest, and then a majority of it goes to be used as an umbrella. At the end of his journey, all he is left with is a small piece to give to his mother.

On Christmas morning, he shares with his mother the reason why his present wasn’t very big. His mother smiles so big and says my favorite line of the whole book, “Little Mole, your kindness is the biggest, most perfect Christmas gift I have ever received.” Kindness is what God asks of us. He asks us to feed those who are in need. He asks us to show hospitality and give others a place to rest. He asks us to give to others. And Little Mole does exactly that in this book.

Kindness is an important virtue to teach and instill in the lives of our children. And Little Mole’s Christmas Gift is a great book to read to your child and teach them about kindness and giving to others, just as God teaches us in the Bible.

One of my favorite Christmas memories was when my husband, oldest daughter and I spent Christmas Eve in SC with my family and drove all night to spend Christmas Day with his family in AR. I remember seeing Christmas decorations and lights all along the route. We even witnessed a few snowflakes as we drove through TN.

A favorite Christmas memory for me, is when my children found out about Santa. I sat down and explained to them that Santa with the spirit of giving, without expecting anything in return. Every year after that we left an envelope on the tree for each of them with money in it. Their task was to be Santa to someone else and they could never ever let that person know that it was them. So that they could experience the joy that I experienced all those Christmases before when they didn’t know it was me. Today they are both grown and find many ways to be Santa all year long. And it fills my heart. I now have a four-year-old grandson and cannot wait to experience this with him.

I’m so excited! I remember making cranberry and popcorn garlands for our tree, then decorating with all the kids’ homemade ornaments.

My favorite Christmas memory is packing shoeboxes for shipping at the Operation Christmas Child distribution center in Dallas, Texas. This will be my 5th year to do this. I feel like one of Santa’s elves.
