God’s Office

by Vanessa Myers

Over the course of 17 years in the ministry I have had many offices.  Some of them were big, some small, some were shared with other ministries, some were part of a porch, some of them had windows and some of them did not, some of them were secluded and away from the other church offices, and some of them were a part of the office hall, some of them were decorated and some not (especially if there wasn’t much wall space).  All of the offices I have had were different and unique.

Just a few weeks ago, I was given the opportunity to move to a new office just down the hall from mine.  This new office was much bigger and had a window!  If you are in children’s ministry, you know how full your office can get from all the supplies and boxes you receive (especially around VBS time).  There were times when I would have to move boxes just to shut my door, or would be stepping over boxes just to get to my desk.  But I truly loved this cozy little office of mine.  It was a good one!

Needless to say, though, if you are offered more space in the church, you TAKE IT!  Space is precious in the church and I am thankful for the much needed space that was given to me in a bigger office.  I was excited to decorate it and make it a fun place to work.  Here’s what it looks like:

But as I thought more about my office, I realized that my favorite office by far would probably be my back porch.  It’s here where I could spend all day.  I’ve got a beautiful view of the mountains, tons of trees, I can hear lots of sounds in creation like birds, owls, doves, whipporwills, dogs, the wind blowing through the trees, and cars in the distance.  I love the outdoor office I have.

The reason I love my back porch office is because it allows me to out in what I like to call “God’s Office”.  His office is creation.  All of earth and everything in it is what He created.  From the beautiful mountains, to the roaring oceans, to the flowers, to the trees, to the grass, to the animals, to each and every one of us.  We are all God’s creation.

One of the things I like to do when I’m out in God’s Office is sing.  My back porch provides the perfect setting to sing praises to God.  Of course, I only do this when I’m at home by myself (my family might not enjoy my loud singing).  But I love the peacefulness my back porch office provides.  A great place to sing to God in His creation!

One of the songs I like to sing out on my porch is “So Will I (100 Billion X) by Hillsong.  It is a beautiful song that talks about creation and how if creation praises God then so should we. Here are some of the lyrics:

“If the stars were made to worship, so will I
If the mountains bow in reverence, so will I
If the oceans roar Your greatness, so will I
For if everything exists to lift You high, so will I
If the wind goes where You send it, so will I
If the rocks cry out in silence, so will I
If the sum of all our praises still falls shy
Then we’ll sing again a hundred billion times”

Of those lyrics, by far my favorite is,

“For if everything exists to lift You high, so will I”.

Did you get that?

God made everything in creation to lift high His name.  If God made the sky, the trees, the animals, the grass, the wind, the stars, the rocks, the ocean, and the mountains to praise Him, then we are to praise Him, too.

Isaiah 55:12 says,

For you shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall burst into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.

Such beautiful words that describe how creation praises God.  The mountains and the hills break out into song and the trees clap their hands.  All for the honor and glory of God.  And because of this we all should say, “So will I”.

Today, may you go out into “God’s Office” and praise Him.  Spend time with Him through reading His Word, through prayer, through silence, and through song.  Give all glory and honor to God because He is the Creator of all things and because He loves you so much.

God’s Office is truly a remarkable place to spend time with Him.  Will you go to His office today?
