Does your elementary-age child (5-11 year-olds) need some new books about faith and God to read in 2020? Below are some fun books to add to their reading list for the new year!
1. Cold Case Christianity for Kids, J. Warner & Susie Wallace
This is a fun book that allows kids to be detectives and investigate the life of Jesus! The Wallace’s do a great job at teaching kids how to be a good detective and how to study God’s Word. Another fun part to this book is that there is a website (www.ColdCaseChristianityforKids.com) that they can go to and download fill-in sheets that go along with each chapter. Once they complete their training they receive a Certificate of Promotion (also found on the website or in the back of the book). My kids had fun being detectives and learning more about Jesus!
2. Love Letters from God: Bible Stories, Glenys Nellist
You may have heard about the Love Letters from God series books, but if you haven’t then you will want to check it out! I believe my favorite (of the the 4 books in the series) is the original one. This book takes you through different stories in the Bible and helps show kids that the whole Bible is one big love letter from God. Each story also includes a Scripture verse, a prayer, and a lift-the-flap love letter from God where each child can write in their own name. Great book for kids!
3. It Will Be Okay, Lysa TerKeurst
Is your child afraid of change? This book introduces Little Seed and Little Fox who are facing challenges in their lives and aren’t too happy about them. Lysa TerKeurst helps each child understand that no matter what they are going through in their lives, God is with them, and it will really be okay. I highly recommend this book for children who are fearful in the midst of change.
4. Quinn’s Promise Rock , Christie Thomas
I can remember as a child being afraid of things (and still am to some degree today). I remember asking my Mom all those “what if” questions. And that’s what little Quinn the owl does in this beautiful story. Quinn is afraid and she asks her Dad so many questions. Her Dad goes on to remind her all about God and how He is always with us and never leaves us. In the end, Quinn’s Dad gives her a special promise rock that she can carry with her to remind her of God’s presence and His promise to always be with us. This is a great story for children who struggle with fear!
5. Breakfast with Jesus: 100 Devotions for Kids About the Life of Jesus, Vanessa Myers
This is a book I have written that tells children all about the life of Jesus: from His birth to His ascension. Each day features a Scripture passage, devotion, prayer, and a Follow Me activity (a way they can follow Jesus that day). And the book also includes fun breakfast recipes kids can make with their parents! This book is a great way to help children in starting a daily quiet time with God. And it’s also a great devotional for families to do together as well!
Bonus Book Recommendation!
The Pocket Bible Doodle Book
My own children LOVED this book when they were younger! It’s a fun way to make the Bible come to life! Kids are given little tidbits about Bible stories and prompted to draw a pictures of things related to that story. It’s a great book to bring into a worship service for your child!
